A limited number of internship positions are available each year. Outside hires interns from a variety of fields of study, including Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, Business Administration and Retail Management. Interns generally rotate through various positions at Outside such as kayak nature guide, retail associate and reservationist.
Outside offers a fun, diverse and exciting work environment that will improve your business and leadership skills. You will learn how to build relationships with co-workers and clients. An internship with Outside is ideal for those seeking a career in sales, outdoor recreation, retail management, business or related field.
Outside interns work 50 hours per week. They get two days off per week to enjoy all that Hilton Head Island and South Carolina Lowcountry has to offer. Outside offers a terrific employee benefit program and allows interns and employees access to equipment during non-peak times. Additional benefits include great deals on clothing and accessories.

Outside Guide Training
Guiding is a fun and challenging experience. Prior experience is not necessary. Candidates are required to succesffuly complete our 5-day Outside Guide Training Course. Coursework includes kayaking skills, safety skills, basics of interpretive naturalism, ecology, history and environmental awareness. We also cover public relations and leadership skills. This is comprehensive training for the full range of our programs – kayak, boat and land based tours. All new staff, with very few exceptions, are required to successfully complete this program.
The 5-day Guide Training Course costs $275. Successful completion of this course is required to become an Outside guide or Captain. It is an intense, comprehensive training that can lead to further certifications. $175 of the cost will be reimbursed provided that you remain employed with Outside through August 18, 2016. The balance covers books, training materials and uniform. *Note: for interns, the entire cost of Guide Training is non-refundable.
